The Psychedelics and Wellness Synergy (PAWS-30) study aims to explore the efficacy of an integrative, prescriptive, and trackable participant-managed wellness intervention program performed by individuals who have personally utilized a psychedelic substance within the previous two weeks prior to enrolling in the study.

Current psychedelic research demonstrates the pharmacological benefits of psychedelic use in mood disorders such as depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, and more recently, has suggested broad benefits to wellness behavioral changes, and to our knowledge, no study as of yet has specifically studied and measured the psychedelic effects on behavioral health changes. PAWS-30 aims to assist in this gap in health research by assessing and measuring behavioral changes following the use of psychedelics with an array of beneficial behavioral health interventions including exercise, mindfulness, sleep, social connectedness, and nutrition

Study Introduction

Thank you for your interest in Psychedelics and Wellness Synergy: A 30-Day Feasibility, Acceptability, and Exploratory Efficacy Study (PAWS-30). Full access and participation in the study are conducted via the Quantified Citizen app.

Purpose of this Study

The goal of this study is to explore the efficacy of an integrative, prescriptive, and trackable participant-managed wellness intervention program, which follows a self-reported psychedelic experience within two weeks prior to study enrollment.

The researchers conducting this survey do not advocate or promote psychedelic drug use. The aim of this study is to help researchers in the advancement of research regarding the relationship between psychedelics and wellness.

Who is conducting and funding this study?

The Co-Principal Investigators for this study are Drs. Saundra Jain and Donna Rolin. Personal funds will be used to support this study, though it is possible that other sources of small grant funding may be considered in the future.

Inclusion Criteria

Individuals that are at least 18-years-old, are interested in overall wellness improvement after a self-reported psychedelic experience, and meet the following criteria:

  • Must have used a psychedelic substance within the last two weeks prior to study enrollment.
  • Agree not to use a psychedelic substance during the 30-day study.
  • Must have access to a smartphone (iOS or Android) with an internet connection.
  • Agree to read the WILD 5 Program content, which will be available on the study website and in the QC app.
  • Not pregnant or plan to become pregnant in the next 30 days.
  • Not currently suicidal, homicidal, or psychotic.
  • Must speak, read, and understand English.

Study Details

The study involves participating in a 30-day integrated and prescriptive wellness intervention following a self-reported psychedelic experience within two weeks prior to study enrollment, which includes five wellness elements: exercise, mindfulness, sleep, social connectedness, and nutrition.

Study requirements include: Implementing 5 wellness-enhancing daily practices during the 30-day study, documenting daily adherence, completing daily HERO Exercises (Happiness, Enthusiasm, Resilience, and Optimism) to improve physical and mental wellness, and completing pre-post program measures. The study is available via a free Quantified Citizen app (iOS or Android).

What kind of information will I be providing?

You will be asked to complete a consent form, registration and demographics form, pre-post program measures, and a post-program questionnaire. You will also be asked to document your daily wellness practices and your HERO Exercises. The HERO (Happiness, Enthusiasm, Resilience, and Optimism) Exercises consist of 2 daily questions focused on positive psychology traits.

Risks/Discomforts

Potential risks that you may incur through engagement in this study are minimal. One identified risk is the potential that you may become distressed during the study period because physical or mental limitations may limit your ability to engage in the wellness practices. If this occurs, you will have the option to opt out of the study without consequence.

Benefits

Potential benefits that you may expect from this study include no-cost wellness

information/practices for both physical and mental wellbeing. You may also benefit if you opt-in to receive an Individual Summary Report (ISR), which will outline some of your pre-post program scores. This information may serve you in gaining a better understanding of your wellness gains and areas requiring more attention. Additionally, this information may be beneficial in your work with a healthcare professional if you so chose to share it. You may also benefit by aiding in the advancement of research regarding wellness as a clinical and community-based intervention following a psychedelic experience.

Compensation

There is no compensation for participating in this study.

What if I decide to stop participating?

Your participation in this study is 100% voluntary. Even after you provide consent, you are free to withdraw from the study at any given time by tapping the β€œLeave Study” button on the study information screen.

Confidentiality

Data will be collected through the Quantified Citizen app including consent, registration/demographics form, and pre-post program forms. No direct personal identifying information (email, name, date of birth) will be collected through the app. Data will be de-identified upon collection through the use of participants’ unique identification codes, which will be created via the app during the initial study onboarding. This process will be used to identify and link participant responses over the course of the study. The database server collecting responses from the app will store no data about the users other than an identifier derived from the randomly generated username. IP address information will be collected to ensure the operation and security of the servers from a technical perspective and will be removed from the server logs every 48 hours to further limit indirect identifiers.

What will become of the results of this study?

Our study will lend support to the growing body of research on the efficacy of wellness interventions for those that have previously used psychedelics. Finally, it is hoped that the study findings will yield increased utilization of and access to this type of wellness intervention, thereby improving public health and wellbeing.
