music-and-psychedelics (1)

The Music and Psychedelics study aims to reveal how the interaction between music and psychedelic compounds affects subjective experience, music preferences, and wellbeing.

The study involves collecting data with questionnaires (and, optionally, via wearable devices) before, during, and at several time points after a listening experience, with or without a psychedelic drug, for which music will be provided.

Interactions between music and psychedelics have long been integrated into the traditions of human cultures around the world and have become the subject of scientific research. Studies have measured the significant effects of psychedelics on the experience of music and also the effects of music on the therapeutic benefits of psychedelic-assisted therapies. However, research to date has been limited to a small number of psychedelic compounds and a narrow range of music, and has not considered other factors influencing the experience and long-term effects that are unique to each listener. The Music and Psychedelics study aims to contribute to this growing area of research by considering a wider array of psychedelics, a wider variety of music, and also by taking into account unique characteristics of individual listeners, such as music preferences.

You can begin the study by downloading the Quantified Citizen app, whose link can be found at the top of this page. If you have trouble with registration, please see the FAQ section of this page. Once in the app, look for the Music and Psychedelics study. You will be guided through the steps to enroll in the study.

⚪ Study Introduction
Are you planning to have an experience, with or without a psychotropic drug, that can involve listening to music? If so, this study is for you! Thank you for your interest in the Music and Psychedelics study. Full access and participation in the study are conducted via the Quantified Citizen app.

⚪ Purpose of the Study
The goals our Music and Psychedelics study are to learn how the interaction between music and psychedelic compounds affects subjective experience, music preferences, and wellbeing.
The researchers conducting this survey do not advocate or promote psychedelic drug use. The aim of this study is to help advance research into the relationship between music and psychedelics.

⚪ Who is conducting and funding this study?
Wavepaths Ltd. is conducting and funding this study. It is possible that other sources of funding to facilitate expanding the scope of the research or disseminating results may be considered in future.

⚪ Inclusion Criteria
English-speaking adults, 18 years of age or older, with the right to consent on their own behalf
Planning to have an experience within the next two months, with or without a psychedelic drug, that can involve listening to music
With access to a smartphone (iOS or Android) with an internet connection

⚪ Study Details
The study involves completing questionnaires (and, optionally, sharing data from your wearable devices) before, during, and at several time points after a listening experience, with or without a psychotropic drug, for which music will be provided.
The study is available via a free Quantified Citizen app (iOS or Android).

⚪ What kind of information will I be providing?
You will be asked to complete a consent form, questionnaires related to demographics, personality, mood, listening preferences, mental health, and wellbeing. You also have the option to share data from your wearable devices, including heart-rate, breathing, and movement measures.

⚪ Risks/Discomforts
Psychedelics are controlled and illegal substances in Canada and many other countries. Participating in this study does not make them legal.
Although you will hear music that has been designed to support positive experiences, your experience of the music may be negative.
Some of the questions asked in the study examine topics of a personal nature (e.g., mental health and psychedelics use).

⚪ Benefits
You may have a positive experience with the music provided to you.

You will receive free access to the Wavepaths Listener Community for participating in this study, including access to Guided & Personalised Deep Listening sessions (https://wavepaths-listeners.mn.co/). The duration of free access will increase as you complete more of the study.

We also plan to share aggregated results of the study with participants.

By participating in this study, you may help increase the scientific understanding of interactions between music and psychedelic experiences, which could potentially benefit the development of more effective music-based and psychedelic-assisted therapies.

⚪ Compensation
There is no compensation for participation in this study.

What if I decide to stop participating?
Your participation in this study is 100% voluntary. Even after you provide consent, you are free to withdraw from the study at any given time by tapping the “Leave Study” button on the study information screen.

⚪ Confidentiality
All data will be collected through the Quantified Citizen app. No direct personal identifying information (email, name, date of birth) will be collected through the app. Data will be de-identified upon collection through the use of participants’ unique identification codes, which will be created via the app during the initial study onboarding. This process will be used to identify and link participant responses over the course of the study. The database server collecting responses from the app will store no data about the users other than an identifier derived from the randomly generated username. IP address information will be collected to ensure the operation and security of the servers from a technical perspective and will be removed from the server logs every 48 hours to further limit indirect identifiers.

⚪ What will become of the results of this study?
The data we collect from this study will help to advance the scientific understanding of how music and psychedelic experiences interact, including how music may help facilitate therapeutic benefits in the context of psychedelic experiences. The project has the potential to inform future controlled studies, including clinical trials.

⚪ HIPAA Disclosure
Any information we collect about you in this study will be anonymized and aggregated during analysis. We may need to send your anonymous information to people outside the research team, for example, an accredited ethics review board. Your anonymised data may be analysed by other parties in future, for example for retrospective research related to this study. These people will use your anonymous information for the sole purpose of the study.

⚪ Contact Information
If you have questions about the study, please contact Wavepaths at research@wavepaths.com with “Quantified Citizen” in the subject line. If you have questions about the Quantified Citizen app, please email studies@quantifiedcitizen.com. If you ask a question, we will be able to view your email address. All information obtained during the study will be entirely anonymous. All digital data collection will be self-administered. You will get a unique, randomly generated username and your identity will remain anonymous. Please write down this username and keep it in a secure location. You will need it to login into the app should you lose your phone as well as to access your individual data summary and aggregated data. If for any reason you no longer have access to your QC account, and you do not remember your username, QC will not be able to regenerate your account.

You will never be asked to provide your real name, address, or date of birth. Averaged group data may be published or publicly presented, but it will not be possible to identify individual participants from this data. The Quantified Citizen app will not have access to any of your personal identifying information. Quantified Citizen will only access IP addresses from server logs for security and quality control and will delete them every 48 hours to limit indirect identifiers. Only authorized QC staff can access server logs based on their role and a need-to-know basis in order to fulfill their duties. IP addresses are not included in the data that will be analyzed in this study.

All of the data you enter into the Quantified Citizen app will be encrypted and stored in perpetuity on servers located in Canada. Anonymous data will be accessible to all researchers involved with this study. The data may be accessible to other researchers in the future. Any data you have previously entered into the app regarding the microdosing study will be used in addition to any data you enter in the future.

Data will be kept for 5 years following publication of the research at which point the data on the external hard drive and university’s server will be wiped clean.
